From this first
floor apartment you look over the enclosed
kitchen garden which has supplied the castle
with vegetables, fruit and flowers for over 300
years. There is also a good view of the ancient
and curiously sculpted yew hedges lining the
Broadwalk and leading up to the castle.
But the real joy of
this apartment is its proximity not only to the
castle, but also to the long sweep of shingle
beach and the sea – less than five minutes walk
away.
Walmer Castle has many reminders of its former
inhabitants. The Pitt Museum contains
memorabilia of William Pitt the Younger, the
Duke of Wellington’s room reflects the
simplicity of the living / sleeping quarters he
chose, whilst close by in the Wellington Museum,
aspects of the Duke’s private life are on
display including a pair of the famous
‘Wellington’ boots.
Each English Heritage holiday cottage has a
story to tell: its past inextricably linked
with an historic house, a fortified castle or
a great estate. But rather than try to
recreate that past in our interiors we’ve
chosen instead to reflect the best of
contemporary design.

This cosy cottage for two enjoys an enviable location quietly tucked away in a courtyard development just 200 yards from the heart of Sandwich one of the most beautifully preserved medieval towns in Britain. Within 50 yards a lovely riverside park (pictured) is ideal for a peaceful amble and pubs restaurants bars cafes cinema independent shops ancient churches the White Mill windmill and museum farm shops and the railway station are all an easy walk. The shingle beach at Sandwich Bay lies 2 miles away and many nearby historic sites including Richborough Roman fort and amphitheatre and the fascinating castles at Deal Walmer and Dover are in the care of English Heritage. The White Cliffs of Dover (10 miles) enjoy worldwide fame and day trips to Europe are easily accessible.
