A small market town on the River Ancholme, it is
thought that the name of Brigg is derived from "briggja", an old Norse word
meaning a jetty. Brigg was granted a Royal Charter to establish a market in
1205AD and was known for two very unusual products, liquorice and rabbits
(for meat and fur). As stagecoach routes became established in the 16th
century, several coaching inns were built for both people and horses.
Further expansion came with the arrival of the Manchester, Sheffield and
Lincolnshire Railway, this provided easy access for visitors to visit the
town's famous, Thursday market.
