Ancient tribes saw the potential in this 200ft
limestone plateau overlooking the surrounding flat landscape and responded
to its military potential. The Romans also turned the locale into a mighty
hilltop fort. Today Lincoln still features a Roman city gate, known as The
North Gate, used by traffic. There's also Fossdyke Navigation,
the 11-mile Roman canal, and the oldest in the country. William the
Conqueror ordered the building of Lincoln Castle, and parts of the walls and
keep still stand in Castle Square. He was also was responsible for a
cathedral, consecrated in 1092. After a fire and an earthquake the cathedral
was rebuilt. The earliest surviving parts of Lincoln Cathedral date from
around 1200 AD. The triple-towered cathedral dominates the skyline for
miles, and is surrounded by medieval buildings set amongst cobbled streets.
The cathedral displays one of only four copies of the Magna Carta and the
medieval street pattern has survived. The shops on the High Street date from
the 14th century and are located on a 12th century bridge. Lincoln is known
for its spectacular Christmas Markets and Hartsholm Country Park is only a
couple of miles from the city centre.
