Often referred to as the "Capital of the
Lincolnshire Wolds" Louth is a small market town. Like many rural towns, the
coming of the railway brought increased prosperity. However, passenger
services ended in 1970 and freight trains stopped in 1980. The Grimsby-Louth
Railway Preservation Society was established and has restored Ludborough
station and signal box as a working museum. A half-mile line also runs
trains hauled by steam and diesel locomotives. The local church, St. James'
features a 295 foot spire, and claims to be the tallest parish church in the
UK.
