A favourite destination for thousands of Midlanders,
Skegness first became a seaside resort in the late 19th century, thanks to
the railway explosion and its long sandy beach. Its potential was
spotted by the great holiday-entrepreneur Billy Butlin in 1936 when he
opened his first holiday camp on a former beet field. The resort possesses a
reputation for bracing sea air and offers visitors a wide variety of
traditional seaside entertainment. Skegness features include expansive
dunes, and seafront gardens. There's also two golf courses. Sadly the pier
was wrecked by storms in 1978.
