Sleaford, an ancient market town has much to
commend it, though little remains of its famous castle where King John was
treated for a fever that eventually killed him. Dating back to the 13th
century, St. Denys’s Church dominates the town with its 144ft stone spire,
possibly one of the oldest of its kind in England. There's a small
collection of chained books located inside the church. A carved stone, from
1689 depicts bull-baiting, and can be found at The Black Bull Inn. The sport
was last practised at Sleaford in 1807.
