Stamford was an important woollen centre in the
Middle Ages and the ensuing wealth paid for many of its beautiful old
buildings, which no doubt helped the government when it designate the town
as Britain’s first conservation area in 1967. This elegant town has a number
of early parish churches, including St Mary’s and its 13th century spire.
William Cecil, a manor of Stamford and favoured adviser to Queen Elizabeth
1, built Burghley House, which is regarded as England's largest and most
grandiose Elizabethan house around today. Stamford most bizarre claim to
fame has to be that Daniel Lambert (the biggest Englishman ever) was laid to
rest in St. Martin’s churchyard. He weighed 52 stone when he died in the
early 19th century.
