A busy industrial town played a pivotal role in
the Sankey Brook Navigation, England’s first true canal, which led to a
craze for purpose-built waterways. In 1829 the world’s first locomotive,
Stephenson's ‘Rocket’, was put through a series of trials at nearby Rainhill,
giving birth to the railway age. Despite these historic facts, St Helens is
actually known for the manufacture of glass. In recent years ‘World of
Glass’ museum has become a top visitor attraction. The town’s name was
derived from the dedication of a local church to St Helena, the mother of
Constantine, who was believed to have found the cross which Christ had been
crucified on.
