Originally developed as a seaport known as
Bishop’s Lynn its name was changed by Henry VIII during the dissolution of
the monasteries. The flint town hall, built around 1420 is England's oldest
surviving guildhall and contains some of the finest treasures in Britain,
including the 700-year-old silver and enamel King John Cup, one of the
oldest paper books in existence and the King John Sword. There's the Lynn
Museum and the Town Museum of Lynn Life and there's also the 12th century
Church of St. Margaret, once part of a Benedictine monastery. Visit the Old
Gaol House, and experience what prison life was like in the 18th century.
The Red Mount at King's Lynn, also known as the Chapel of Our Lady of the
Mount was a place of pilgrimage built in the reign of Richard III (1483-85).
Demonstrations of glass making is on offer at Caithness Crystal Factory,
along with a resident engraver. Nearby, the 18th century Palladian Houghton
Hall was built for England’s first prime Minister, Robert Walpole and now
owned by the 6th Marquis Hugh, Lord Great Chamberlain to the Queen. Inside
you will find a remarkable collection of 20,000 model soldiers.
