Once the capital of the Danish kingdom ruled by
King Sweyne and then Canute, Thetford later became a Norman stronghold. All
that remains of the 12th century castle is a large mound. The Ancient House
Museum with its fine carved beam ceilings is a timber-framed Tudor building.
