With much of the town destroyed by fire in 1675,
Northampton was quickly rebuilt around one of the largest market squares in
England. Located on a the River Nene, the town was once the main centre of
manufacturing for boots and shoes. One of the largest collections of
footwear in the world is own display at Northampton’s Central Museum. The
town’s Guildhall is considered a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic
architecture, and is one of many fascinating old buildings. Nearby, there's
Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral home of George Washington and Canons Ashby,
built by the family of the poet John Dryden. Five churches survived the fire
of 1675, and include the 12th century round Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Hassling House (1620) and the 16th century Welsh House also survived the
flames. Northampton hosts a number of annual festivals.
