One of the oldest towns in England on the Roman
road of Watling Street, where the Romans created a settlement here named
Lactodorum. Towcester was a vibrant coaching town in the 18th and 19th
centuries. The 16th century Saracen’s Head, was visited by the Mr. Pickwick
from the ‘Pickwick Papers’ by Charles Dickens. The parish Church of St.
Lawrence was built on top of a Roman building in the 13th century and
contains a rare collection of chained books. Nearby is Silverstone’s
racecourse.
