With a history predating Roman times, the town
expanded during the industrial revolution and is now known as a centre for
the arts. 'BALTIC - The Centre for Contemporary Arts', located in part of
the former Baltic flour mill in the Gateshead Quays, which forms the heart
of the cultural quarter. Home to the Millennium Bridge, which has attracted
international attention for it's unique design, along with a pioneering
music centre and a host of bars and restaurants. Created by internationally
renowned sculptor, Antony Gormley, Britain's largest sculpture, The Angel of
the North stands over 20 metres tall, and there's also the 'Marking the
Ways' sculptural trail, a six mile circular route featuring 30 pieces of
art, plus the award-winning Riverside Sculpture Park. The Metro Centre and
Retail world in the town centre is excellent for shopping trips, whilst the
Whickham Thorns Outdoor Activity Centre was the UK's first outdoor boulder
climbing facility. Derwenthaugh Park, opened on the site of a former coke
works, features acres of parkland, cycle tracks, footpaths, a fishing lake
and a golf course. Not bad when you consider Gateshead started out as
literally a bridge and Gatehouse across the River Tyne.
