Hidden away for 900 years near the picturesque village of Amberley in the chalk South Downs, Amberley Castle is a magnificent historical treasure that offers a truly unique experience. Through the Portcullis and 60 ft curtain walls you will find beautiful landscaped gardens, fine examples of medieval architecture and an unrivalled atmosphere of peace and tranquility. The castle offers 19 luxurious hotel bedrooms and suites, all featuring spa baths in the bathrooms. The hotel's facilities include two restaurants, lounge areas, tennis court, croquet lawn, gardens and lakes and a stunning thatched-roof tree house complete with rope bridge. The castle is still completely enclosed by a high curtain wall, which is only flanked by a magnificent twin-tower gatehouse to the south and a kitchen block and a garderode tower with gun loops to the north. One of the exciting projects for the Castle's 900th anniversary in 2003 was the creation of a new professional standard 18-hole putting course within its extensive grounds. The course is open for Castle residents offering guests the opportunity not only to sharpen up their green's play, but a tranquil and imaginative new garden in which to stroll. With an impressive water cascade and two new lakes, it is a quiet haven in which to watch the wildlife or sit and relax in one of three gazebos, each boasting superb views to the South Downs or across the course to the Castle.

This old West Sussex town, lying on the River
Arun is overshadowed by the turreted Arundel Castle, the family seat of the
Dukes of Norfolk. It may look medieval but it was actually reconstructed
during the 18th and 19th centuries. The keep does date back to Norman times.
The Roman Catholic Arundel Cathedral, granted high status in 1869, was built
a few years earlier in the French Gothic style. Medieval features include
gargoyles and flying buttresses. The fine examples of Victorian glass, were
mostly designed by Nathaniel Westlake. Lying at the bottom of the Offham
Hangar is the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's 60-acre nature reserve.
