Named after the Battle of Hastings, William the
Conqueror would later build St. Martin’s Abbey on the hilltop. The town grew
around the abbey, and its gateway is a feature of Battle’s main street.
Battle has a reputation for producing England’s best gunpowder and is famous
for staging spectacular Guy Fawkes Night celebrations. English Heritage look
after the abbey ruins and the battlefield.
