The beautiful cathedral city and harbour town of
Chichester lies in West Sussex, encircled by a wall built by the Romans
after they settled here in ‘Noviomagus Regensium’. Parts of the wall still
survive as does most of the Romans street plan. The city’s old centre is
divided into quarters, a 16th century Market Cross stands where the roads
meet. The Romans road Stane Street (70 AD) linked the city with London, part
of it can still be walked. Attractions include the Festival Theatre, opened
in 1962 under the direction of Laurence Olivier, and the magnificent 12th
century Gothic cathedral features a towering 15th century spire, the only
medieval cathedral in England with a separate bell tower, visible from the
sea.
