The medieval market town in West Sussex is
dominated by the walls of 17th century Petworth House, built n 1696 by the
6th Duke of Somerset, with grounds laid out by ‘Capability’ Brown. The area
inspired the artist J. M. W. Turner, his pictures hang inside Petworth
House, along with works by Pussin and Van Dyck. Carvings by the great
Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721) can be found within, the aptly named, The
Carved Room. The 3rd Lord Leconfield handed the building and grounds over to
the National Trust in 1947.
