The harbour town of Rye in East Sussex, Rye was
once an important Channel port until the sea began to recede. With fine old
buildings, a steep cobbled street leads visitors to the Mermaid Inn, and the
arcaded town hall dates from 1742. Henry James (1843-1916) the writer, lived
at Lamb House from 1898 until his death and a later occupant of the house,
E. E. Benson (1867-1940), another writer, who later became the local mayor.
